About 4 years ago I switched from Tide Laundry Detergent to a more eco-friendly non-toxic detergent. I first started out with buying the safest brand from the grocery store. Then one year my sister and I made the homemade laundry detergent recipe that can be found here. I think this homemade detergent is the most economical of all. I would like to make this formula more. For now, I order Charlie’s Soap. It is a safe, non- toxic, biodegradable soap. I found out about this detergent from other cloth diapering moms. I have done a little cloth diapering and at the time I really needed a detergent that was non-toxic and good at cleaning. Such is the case with Charlie’s Soap. Here is a little about the detergent. I use the powdered detergent- by the way. ”The detergent parts of all of our products come from a coconut oil base, a unique blend of biodegradable surfactants that has come from years of research. They also contain pure, highest grade, completely soluble, Green River, WY soda ash (washing soda).” I also buy the Hard Water Treatment & Laundry Booster. We have really hard water in Florida and this really helps clean the laundry. I don’t use it in every wash- just about once every 2 weeks. ”Charlie’s Soap Laundry Booster & Hard Water Treatment uses a biodegradable phosphate that leaves no residue on your clothes while softening your wash water. Certain phosphates can safely eliminate these problems and be environmentally friendly. The advantage of using Charlie’s Soap with our new Laundry Booster & Hard Water Treatment is that you get the benefit of really clean clothes without a lot of chemicals left behind.” This is a great alternative to the standard laundry detergent that is sold in the store.
