A bad sunburn at the end of a fun day outside can just about ruin it. We do a lot of preventative things to avoid sunburns. Here are a few:

1. Take high doses of fermented cod liver oil (helps w/ Vit D deficiency- why people burn). It has been suggested to take a dose right before you go out in the sun for long periods of time, to prevent burns. I give the boys a children’s form of fish oil and they love it.
2. Rub a small amount of coconut oil over the skin, under the sunscreen. Or use a homemade sunscreen that has coconut oil in it. Mine doesn’t, but the next batch I make it will. The coconut oil helps protect the skin from sunburn.
3. Generally, make sure you have a strong healthy immune system. A healthy diet full of proper fats, vitamins, and enzymes will help nourish the skin and prevent sunburns.
4. Use swim shirts or UV clothes during the peak hours of the day… usually between 12-4 pm for my family.
5. Wear hats during the hottest hours.
If you fall victim to a slight or serious burn I have a few recommendations. If you have a serious burn always seek the advice of your doctor. These suggestions are for first degree burns.
1. Classic natural remedy: Aloe Vera. Buy a very high quality form. No extra added chemicals~ check your labels. I would first check your local health food store- do not buy these at the regular grocery store, too many toxic chemicals added.
2. Calendula- (tincture, gel, or spray) for first degree burns. Treated topically.
3. Uritca urens- used internally every few hours (30 C) for pain if needed.
4. Hypericum -spray or dilute tincture (one part tincture to 3 parts water) for 2nd degree burns b/f the blisters have broken. After the blisters have popped, apply Calendula via the spray, gel, or diluted tincture 2 or 3 times a day, keeping the area covered by a cotton gauze bandage.
5. Cantharis-(30 C) taken internally for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd degree burns. For 3rd degree burns do not apply any external application and see your doctor immediately.
6. Home remedy: Apply apple cider vinegar to the area. This is what my mother used on us growing up. It pulls the heat from the area- which helps w/ pain. We would always put some on a little towel and pat the areas, no pain the next day. It works great.
7. Stay well hydrated. Drink lots of water or my make my favorite homemade gatorade beverage.

Avoid sun burns whenever possible. Eat right. Use non-toxic sunscreens. Wear UV protected clothing. Drink water.
