Damaging Effects of Sugar


The negative things sugar can do far surpass the momentary happiness on your tongue after consuming a mouth full of it on a fresh donut or in your morning coffee. Unfortunately, sugar can also throw off the body’s homeostasis and create many short term and long term problems. Excess sugar may result in a number of other significant consequences such as achy joints, acne, wrinkle, digestive problems, mood swings and a slew of metabolic affects.

In almost all parts of developed countries and third world countries as well, people are ingesting entirely too much sugar. So much that we are reprogramming our bodies’ digestive and other internal systems. Our insulin levels are going haywire and more and more people are developing type-2 diabetes.  Even if when people are not afflicted with this form of diabetes, eating too much sugar has a profound effect on how our bodies operate from the inside out.

Below is a list of the damaging effects of SUGAR:

Sugar Hinders Vitamin C Absorption: Vitamin C is a vital, powerful nutrient that, among many other things, helps our skin look great and our immune system strong. Excessive sugar intake inhibits the intake of Vitamin C and impairs defenses against infectious disease

Sugar Causes Collagen Breakdown: Over time, a loss of tissue elasticity and function occurs. The delicate connective tissue that keeps our skin toned and tight breaks down faster on a diet made up of excessive consumption. Think of collagen as your skin’s best defense against gravity.

Sugar Elevates Bad Cholesterol/Lowers Good Cholesterol: Sugar has been shown to elevate bad cholesterol and lower good HDL cholesterol. In fact, a recent study funded by the British Heart Association1 showed that people living with Type-2 diabetes had high levels of newly-discovered “ultra bad” cholesterol called MGmin-LDL. This LDL cholesterol is sticker that the garden-variety (already bad) LDL cholesterol. Stickier than regular LDL? That cannot be good.

Sugar upsets the mineral relationships in your body: causes chromium and copper deficiencies and interferes with absorption of calcium and magnesium.

Sugar can cause can cause a rapid rise of adrenaline, hyperactivity, anxiety, difficulty concentrating, and crankiness in children.

Sugar feeds cancer cells and has been connected with the development of cancer of the breast, ovaries, prostate, rectum, pancreas, biliary tract, lung, gallbladder and stomach.

Sugar can increase fasting levels of glucose and can cause reactive hypoglycemia.

Sugar can weaken eyesight.

Sugar can cause many problems with the gastrointestinal tract including: an acidic digestive tract, indigestion, malabsorption in patients with functional bowel disease, increased risk of Crohn’s disease, and ulcerative colitis.

    What kind of substitute? I mean so many sugar substitutes are very harmful and carbs carry sugar! Also natural fruit? Is that harmful, in excess I mean?? What is too much??? I knew sugar was bad, but not this bad lol!!! Thanks for this post!!!

    Wow, thanks for this post! What alternatives do you choose? How much natural fruit is too much sugar?? Carbs has lots of sugar?? Do we need to be careful how much is in there(sugar in carbs)???

    I would suggest palm sugar, honey, maple syrup, coconut sugar… everything in moderation. Try not to eat very processed foods because they are usually loaded with sugar… hidden sugar. I think fruit is ok… in its natural form. Just not too much like everything else. We eat fruit for our desserts in our home. The kids love it!
